Staff Spotlight: Bri Whitaker

Every month we like to introduce one of our staff members so you can get to know them better. This month, our Commercial Account Manager Bri told us her favorite Biggs story: an eventful paddle boarding excursion on the Columbia!

You won the lottery! What’s your first purchase?

First, I would give a certain amount to each of my children to help them out and set up some college funds for the grandchildren. But I see I may have misinterpreted the question – it’s asking what would be my first purchase! If I could buy something that I’ve always wanted, it would be a baby grand piano, one with those self-playing devices so that I could enjoy it while I was learning how to play it myself. I took a couple years of lessons when I was a teenager, and have always wanted to go back to learn more!

Share one thing you love to do that you always strive to include in your daily routine.

Lately, one thing I’ve loved doing is calling my mother every day on my drive to work, as she is aging and feels alone. I know I bring her joy, even though she may not always say so. I like to try and bring others joy, even if it is just through a phone call.

What are some of your favorite hobbies or activities?

Well, I don’t really have time for hobbies yet, but my favorite activity at this stage of my life is spending time with my grandchildren – reading stories, doing puzzles, cuddling, playing “restaurant” etc. I have twin granddaughters who are 5, soon to be 6, that live in Spokane; and another granddaughter, 3, and grandson, 5 mo., that live in Astoria. So this keeps me pretty occupied. I’ve been looking forward to making Christmas cookies and a gingerbread train this year with them.

Tell us about one of your most memorable experiences.

I’ve been blessed to have many memorable experiences in my life, but I’d have to say the MOST memorable experience was the birth of my first child. Growing up I’d babysit other people’s children, and I didn’t like it; I really didn’t think I wanted kids. But it happened, I had my own child (a girl)! It was a difficult experience, but I made it through, and wow, it totally changed my perspective on children. Once you have your own, and experience forming a relationship with them, it became the most memorable experience of my life. I went on to have 3 more (boys)!

What is your favorite Biggs story?

I knew this question was coming! I have it in my memory banks the time just last summer that we had a group outing – about 10 of us rented paddle boards to go on the Columbia River for a couple hours… paddling to the Island Café and back.

The paddle boarding crew

Well on the way back one our paddles broke! So, another of my colleagues generously gave his paddle to the tired paddle boarder, and had to get towed back between two of our other paddle boarders. It was fun, and hilarious! Hopefully we will do it again, and this time with no defective paddles! 😊

Is your favorite season spring, summer, winter, or fall – and why?

Summer is my favorite, mostly due to sun and warmth. I love to get out and enjoy the outdoors, whatever activity it may be, from walking, to riding bikes, and paddle boarding, or kayaking. If I had a boat, I’d be out in that also. Maybe that would be my second purchase if I won the lottery!

What was your first job?

My first “real” job, other than babysitting and selling night crawlers to the local bait shop, was McDonald’s.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Flight, so I could fly to see my grandchildren, of course! No brainer 😊
