Staff Spotlight: Dawn Coyer
Every month we like to introduce one of our awesome staff members so you can get to know them better. This month, our Commercial Lines team member Dawn relates the story of a nearly-disastrous flight to New York with her daughter’s jazz band.
You won the lottery! What’s your first purchase?
Time with my family and making cherished memories is the most valuable thing to me. Therefore, if I won the lottery, the first purchase I would make is a fabulous (and long) trip to Hawaii for my entire family. We would spend the days playing in the ocean watching sea turtles swim by, kayaking, snorkeling, taking long scooter rides around the island, and enjoying the beautiful sunsets.
Share one thing you love to do that you always strive to include in your daily routine.
My favorite thing to do each day is to go to the barn in the evening and spend time with our horses, giving them a good brushing and lots of treats. When I head out to the barn, the horses begin to nicker and whinny and right now, I pick apples off our trees on the way, which is their favorite treat!
What are some of your favorite hobbies or activities?
My garden is my happy place and I adore the whole process of planting, maintaining, and harvesting. The blueberries have provided an exceptional yield this year! Many of the plants in our landscaping attract hummingbirds and butterflies, which I especially enjoy. Two nights ago, we encountered a large and rather upset raccoon in the garden. After going to the far end of the garden to move the sprinkler, one by one, three baby raccoons emerged out of our zucchini patch – it was adorable!
Tell us about one of your most memorable experiences.
In 2004, my daughter’s High School jazz band took a trip to New York for a national competition at the Lincoln Center and I joined them as chaperone. Around 30 minutes into the flight, the emergency slide released and was flapping on the side of the plane right next to the engine, forcing us to turn around and make an emergency landing in Portland. We had to wait six hours for another plane and when we finally made it to New York, the airline had lost all of the instruments and it took another 24 hours to have them delivered. Even with all the drama getting to the competition, the students had an amazing experience and they came in second!
What is your favorite Biggs story?
I love the team atmosphere at Biggs. Everyone truly cares about our customers and our fellow colleagues!
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is the one thing you couldn’t live without?
I truly could not live without books. I love the adventure and life experiences lived vicariously through the written word, which would help fill the time when I wasn’t trying to survive 🙂
Is your favorite season spring, summer, winter, or fall – and why?
Spring is my favorite season of the year – I appreciate the gift of watching life literally Spring into action, the flowers sprouting, the trees budding, the baby swallows in our barn chirping, and the days start getting longer!
What was your first job?
My first job was at A&W restaurant where I brought the food order out to the car on roller skates! (Did I just date myself?)
