Every month we like to introduce one of our staff members so you can get to know them better. This month, our Life & Health Broker Patrick told us about a touching undersea encounter with a baby sea turtle!
You won the lottery! What’s your first purchase?
A plane ticket. I would go somewhere remote (maybe Patagonia?) and take some time to clear my head. In the end, we would search for a charity that my wife and I can support. It’s more money than any of us can spend in our lifetimes.
Share one thing you love to do that you always strive to include in your daily routine.
Working out, get the endorphins going.
What are some of your favorite hobbies or activities?
Hiking with my pit bull, Olympic weightlifting, snowboarding, scuba diving, and traveling to different countries with my significant other.
Tell us about one of your most memorable experiences.
Last year I went diving in Maui for three days and encountered sea turtles every time we dove. The second day, a baby sea turtle swam directly at me and under my legs while we were on the sea floor. I ended up laying there for 20 minutes while he took a nap beside me.
What is your favorite Biggs story?
Since starting in the beginning of 2020, I was in the office for about a month until the entire office (and country) went on lockdown. In March, our activities committee staged a competition about who had the best work-from-home setup. I took a quick picture of my office, which at the time was the kitchen of my tiny 1-bedroom apartment, and ended up being chosen as the winner!
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is the one thing you couldn’t live without?
A satellite phone. Or a magic wand. I don’t ask for much.
What was your first job?
Valet at the Irvine Spectrum while attending UCI. That’s definitely one job where your tips far outweigh your paycheck.
What’s one challenge you’ve faced in life that you’re proud to have overcome?
Coming out of college at the peak of the 2009 recession was tough since no one was hiring at the time (sound familiar?). I worked for free for 6 months on 100% straight commission as a junior cold caller, booking meetings for a senior consultant. My first paycheck was $7.52. A year and a half later I bought my first car.
What does success look like to you?
Staying ambitious without being greedy. Finding joy while being able to provide for your family. Loving the process, not the destination.
